Why roof area differs from floor area
A house’s floor area is useful for describing living space. It is an incomplete measure of the roof above it. Slope, overhangs, garages and additions change the surface that needs covering.
Ask about your roof
Slope adds surface
A sloped surface is longer than its flat footprint. The calculator can convert a simple footprint using pitch, but a measured roof surface is the clearer input when it is available. A pitch input still matters for whether asphalt shingles suit the roof.
Attached roof sections count too
A garage, porch and addition can add roof area beyond the living-space figure. Valleys and separate slopes also add detail work that a single area total does not describe. Actual measurement and roof shape belong in replacement planning.
Use a planning range at its real scope
Our regional asphalt model supports 1,500 to 3,500 square feet of roof surface, with one-layer removal included. It does not price a repair, extra layers, damaged decking or another material. A clear unit makes that starting budget more useful.
