What you see
The shingle profile and color define the broad appearance. Samples and actual product options guide the final selection.

Choose the look you want while understanding the roof system behind it.
A shingle choice combines appearance, product characteristics and installation requirements. A layered architectural profile, a thicker designer profile and an impact rating describe different things. None replaces the need for suitable slope, sound decking and correctly connected flashing.
| Choice | What it changes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Architectural profile | Layered texture and the appearance across the roof. | A universal lifespan, warranty or resistance to every storm. |
| Designer profile | A heavier-looking shape, shadow line or slate-like pattern. | That the existing assembly supports every selected product. |
| Impact-rated product | Performance in the stated product test. | No hail damage, claim approval or an insurance discount. |
| Color and blend | How the roof relates to siding, brick and trim. | That weathered existing shingles can be matched exactly. |
A repair has to fit the existing material’s shape, fastening and exposure as well as its color. Weathering and discontinued products can limit a match. A whole-roof replacement creates a more consistent field but still needs the right accessories and transitions.

Decking, underlayment, ice protection, flashing and ventilation determine how the assembly is built. Product ratings apply under their actual tested and installation conditions.
