Why a chimney leak can return after caulking

A bead of caulk can close a visible gap while leaving the water path beneath it unchanged. A chimney intersects both the roof and masonry, so the same interior symptom can come from more than one place.

The metal has more than one job

Step flashing works with the shingle courses beside the chimney. Counterflashing protects the upper connection at the masonry. If either overlap is missing or failed, rain can get behind the visible surface. Sealant does not recreate the way those pieces should shed water.

The roof above the chimney matters

A wide chimney can interrupt flow down the slope. Valleys or other roof shapes uphill can direct water toward it. The inspection considers that geometry, the metal and the surrounding shingles rather than treating the visible gap as the whole problem.

A repair needs room to reconnect

Replacing damaged flashing can require lifting covering around the chimney. Brittle shingles or wet deck can increase the work. Masonry defects can also need their own repair. The useful scope names the actual path instead of repeating the same surface patch.
